When John Cooper and Alec Issigonis became close friends, little did they know the influence they would have on the future generation of racers. The enthusiasm built from the first MINI Race grew in popularity and, over time, created big events such as the MINI CHALLENGE. Since 2002, and proudly supported by MINI UK, the MINI CHALLENGE has become the place to be for immense grids, energetic cars and close racing. Building its reputation year by year for affordability, fairness and all round fun.
In 2018 the MINI CHALLENGE will consist of 13 events across 3 classes, THE JCW, THE COOPER and THE OPEN Class. All of these make it difficult to find a reason not to get involved in the most exciting racing event of the year. The 2017 season saw plentiful thrill and adventure but the new season promises even more and will enable drivers with a variety of experience and budget to be a part of the MINI CHALLENGE. This will produce a natural route for progression and sponsorships. Along with a number of recurring sponsors, Vines MINI is honored to announce that we are now a proud sponsor of an incredible driver - Lawrence Davey. Lawrence and his team have gone through a number of tests to be able to run in the JCW Class, a stepping stone to touring car racing, along with representing the ‘Best of British’.
At the age of 8, Lawrence grew to love karting and caught the 'bug' for racing. He continued to learn as much as he could for 25 years, until he was able to compete for the first time at the UK MINI Challenge series JCW Class. He returned each year and attained double Legends Cars Champion, 2013 Sunoco Grand Am winner, 2014 MINI Challenge Best of British winner and 2015 MINI Challenge Retailer Cup Champion.
Having been successful in recent years, Lawrence now races under his own team - LDR Performance Tuning. The family-run team have ample experience in tuning and preparing MINIs as they, not only, look after Lawrence’s own car but a number of JCW class cars, including an R56 Cooper S for the Track Day Trophy and Championship.
Although Lawrence missed the start of the 2017 season due to unforeseen circumstances, he did rent out his car, giving new drivers the opportunity to race in an incredible season. By the time the season was over, Lawrence was back in full swing - competing in 3 of the JCW rounds, all without any testing. Furthermore, he scored 2 podiums at Brands Hatch and broke the Lap Record.
Lawrence and his team ended the 2017 season knowing it could have been much more. Nonetheless, with Vines MINI, Mintex Brake Pads and Weatherweave Awnings as sponsors, 2018 is predicted to be momentous. Keep an eye on the Vines MINI social media accounts and on our website for updates on Lawrence’s season progress and to find out when his MINI JCW will be on show at your local Vines Retailer.
